FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE TRANSFER OF TREATED WASTEWATER FROM GREATER TUNIS TO THE CENTER OF THE COUNTRY

Client : Ministery of Environment

Date : 2010 - 2012

The reuse of treated wastewater is the subject of particular attention by the public authorities; this in a context of increasing scarcity of water resources and the need to protect the Gulf of Tunis (outlet of the Greater Tunis wastewater treatment plants).

In 2009, the volume of wastewater reused was 15.126 million m3 (agricultural sector, watering of golf courses and green spaces near treatment plants) for a volume of treated wastewater produced of 93.470 million m3, i.e. a volume of water discharged into the Gulf of Tunis of 78.340 million m3. By 2021, the surplus to be discharged is estimated at 132.400 million m3.

The components targeted by the project relate to the following options:

  • Transfer of purified water from Greater Tunis to direct reuse areas (irrigation) located 60 km to 80 km from Greater Tunis
  • The transfer of treated water to specific areas for groundwater recharge.
