FLOOD PROTECTION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MONASTIR
Client : Direction de l’Hydraulique Urbaine
Date : 2022 - 2023
Floods and their severity are directly related to the topographical and climatic nature of the region, which is characterized by an arid climate but can experience intense rainfall events. Floods are also caused by anthropogenic factors: uncontrolled construction in flood-prone areas. In addition, existing collectors have reduced sections (pipes) and are often clogged, some neighborhoods (industrial city and El Frina city) suffer from the absence of a rainwater drainage network.
The city of Monastir suffered in 1997, 2003, 2012 and especially September 2016, severe weather conditions for a short period. A torrential rain was recorded in September 2016, exceeding the fifty-year flood. These heavy rains caused a significant wave of water causing considerable damage.
